Hosting website from home

Post by only » Mon Oct 19, 2009 1:38 pm

hi,

I have registered domain name from crazydomains.com.au and updated name servers as below,

Primary: ns1.exetel.com.au
Secondary: ns2.exetel.com.au

But i still cannot find the domain name working.
Are there any others steps that I am missing.

How does domain name points to my IP address given by EXETEL.

Regards,
only

the name servers need to know what your external IP address is, I don't think Exetel offer this service, just sign up for a free account at www.zoneedit.com enter your details, set your IP etc and update the name server info they give you with crazy domains

I have no idea what you mean there. We provide DNS hosting and he can request changes to the zone file (ie where hostnames like www.crazydomains.com.au point).

I wasn't sure if you offer the DNS hosting to self hosted sites though, if you do though no problem

We offer DNS hosting. What you put into your zone file is, more or less, your business. :)

You will need an externally accessible PC (or at least port forwards to
one), an OS capable of running a web server of your choice and a web
server of your choice.

You may need additional software depending on what you do with it.

What you select is all upto you.

You will need to point the hostnames (using A records) that you wish to
use for your website to your IP address. Typically these are domain.com.au
and www.domain.com.au (for example).

Thank you Andrew,

I have already designed a webpage and I can view it from my machine.
The problem is its not accessible externally. I have configures IIS and I can browse to my webpage through localhost.

There is a option to update name servers in crazydomain.

How should I update NS. If I am hosting my website from my home PC how will I know what are my name servers?

Regards,

You're best off speaking with 'crazydomains', from whom you have purchased DNS hosting as they are the ones best able to help you with the use of their system. By choosing a 3rd party for DNS hosting and using your own connection for web hosting you've pretty much left Exetel out of the loop and as such we cannot provide you with support for these services.

Hi Andrew,

Sorry for bugging you. I am desperate to host from home.As I have large collection of videos and photos which would take more webspace.

You were saying regarding some changes to zone file.
Whom should I request to change Zone file. crazydomains or exetel.

Thanx&Regards,

Couple of things for IIS and Windows:

First, you want to get the pages to be accessible from http://localhost, which you have done.

Second, you want to get the pages to be accessible from either http://<computername> from another computer in your network, or http://220.233.174.183 from a computer outside your network. I can see this is not working yet (I just tried the IP address). This probably means you have a firewall blocking the connection. Check in your modem that port 80 is open and forwarded to your computer's internal IP address. Also check that Windows Firewall has port 80 open as an exception. Some routers interfere with web hosting since they operate their "external management configuration" on port 80. In this case, you probably want to recongifure IIS to use port 81, open port 81 on firewall and modem and use "http://220.233.174.183:81 as a URL instead.

Next, you want to get the domain name working in place of the IP address. This is usually done via Crazy Domain hosting, but you can delegate the duty to freedns.afraid.org if you don't want to pay Crazy Domain any extra. What you need to do is login to your crazy domain account and set up your name servers to be ns1.afraid.org and ns2.afraid.org instead of Crazy Domain's. Then you create an account on freedns.afraid.org and add the domains
