Can't FTP at the moment

Post by bundy » Wed Nov 18, 2009 10:45 pm

Hi All,

just joined Exetel yesterday, had FTP working intermittently yesterday then it just wouldn't connect.

See if you can work out what is going wrong

I am using Filezilla
site: home.exetel.com.au
port: 21
User: fw_mynameIchoseonmemberssection
Pssword: had original one, but when it stopped working I reset it and have been trying that one now

No other settings touched in Filezilla advanced etc

Anybody got any ideas for me to try?

cheers
Paul

edit: my error message in Filezilla

Connecting to home.exetel.com.au ...
Status: Connected with home.exetel.com.au. Waiting for welcome message...
Error: Disconnected from server
Error: Unable to connect!

Can you see the actual ftp terminal conversation, rather than client messages, like this-

220 220.233.0.59 FTP server ready
USER fw_mynameIchoseonmemberssection
331 Password required for fw_mynameIchoseonmemberssection
PASS xxxx
230 User fw_mynameIchoseonmemberssection logged in

-to see if it is simply a password error? (It might be easier to relinquish the site and get a new one) If successful, it should continue with something like: SYST TYPE I PWD PASV LIST -aL

No I can't in Filezilla, also in SmartFTP

Error in SmartFTP is

[22:00:11] SmartFTP v4.0.1069.0
[22:00:11] Resolving host name "home.exetel.com.au"
[22:00:11] Connecting to 220.233.0.59 Port: 21
[22:00:11] Connected to home.exetel.com.au.
[22:00:13] Server closed connection

and just tries deleting my site, adding a new one with a different name and password - still same result

any ideas?

(oh also closed down sygate which I had running - but that has never caused problems before with my previous ISP, same result)

The server doesn't seem to like you does it? When I have these problems I use the Linux terminal and see the exact messages, as above. If you have a live Puppy CD on hand, it includes gFTP which gives you full information, and bypasses Windows. Is it possible that you have a malware suite besides Sygate that is blocking any attempt at login? The server will kick you off if you don't reply to it.

PS Is it Vista?

Only other things I use are spybot and Avast - turned off avast and tried with no difference

Any windows based FTP clients that you know of that will give me all the info?

cheers

For the Vista bug - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/934376 (but that stops transfers, not logins), otherwise, the built in Microsoft ftp client is described at http://www.nsftools.com/tips/RawFTP.htm and also in MS's modified form at http://www.nsftools.com/tips/MSFTP.htm. The login commands posted above (PASS etc) are what MS calls raw mode. There is a blog comment at http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/howdoi/?p=172
