login to webspace

Post by circus » Fri Feb 10, 2012 12:23 pm

Hi I am getting a 530: Login incorrect when trying to edit my webspace. It has been a while since I have used this so I reset my password and know that it is correct. I'm assuming the ftp is correct as I can access the site but am I doing something else wrong. I would like to use Filezilla but have tried through IE too and same messgae. Any tips?

Please email your website name to hosting@exetel.com.au so we can check the login for you.

The error comes from the ftp server - essentially it didn't like your login name or password, both being case sensitive, as this isn't Windows. For Exetel free space, don't forget fw_ fixed to the front of the user's name.

Filezilla, WS_FTP, etc are for convenience, rather than essential. You can perform all ftp functions the very old-fashioned way in a terminal/prompt window. To test your login to the free webspace site xxx --
$ftp home.exetel.com.au
Connected to home.exetel.com.au.
220 220.233.0.59 FTP server ready
Name (home.exetel.com.au:xxx): fw_xxx
331 Password required for fw_xxx
Password:
230 User fw_xxx logged in
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.

Other command include:
To list the folder: ls
To quit: quit
To get more, type ?

Most ftp graphic apps will show this conversation as it continues.
