Testing a Webhosting Site before Going Live

Hi,

I have place a copy of my working website onto the new webhost space provided by Exetel.
All items where copied into the public_html folder provided including the index.html

Currently the Domain name is still operating at the other current provider.

Is there a URL available to be able to test the new site before the domain is swapped over?
ie http://web.exetel.com.au/web/www.shellh ... index.html

Thanks Dave.

Can you explain what you mean by 'point your hosts file'?

I under stand the current provider has a map to the virtual domain at their site.
But I don't know the virtual URL path to the exetel webspace site.

Thanks

If you know the Exetel hosted IP address, you can alter the hosts file so that your domain name points to the IP address. It's a kind of DIY DNS system, that bypasses a DNS lookup, for your computer only.

Typical DNS lookup for A record:
$ dig +short www.exetel.com.au A
220.233.0.9

We want the computer to return this without going out to a DNS server.

I added the entry 220.233.0.22 www.shellharboursurfclub.com
To my host and the ping confirmed its in place.

When I try the URL www.shellharboursurfclub.com
Its still taking me to the real domain site?

Don't worry,

The DNS was not beeing used by IE for some reason. Did it on another PC it worked OK.
Ready to change Domain registration Named Hosts and do the swap.

I'm glad it's OK now. Windows caches DNS lookups, so you probably needed to flush it so the hosts file would be consulted - ipconfig /flushdns. You can see the cache current contents from the command ipconfig /displaydns | more

I noticed a couple of niggles with the old site - refer your page URLs or source files to http://validator.w3.org for a checkup.
