Wirless broadband with voip

Post by pcp20us » Wed Jul 29, 2009 10:00 am

Hi

My current set up is a open 4 port wireless router with 2 voip ports. with adsl1 1500/256.
I now have a laptop. so think of getting wireless broadband. Can i get wireless bb for my laptop and replace my adsl connection at home with this?. Will i be able to run VOIP over it.

I read some posts where people have the usb wirkess plugged into an antena.
Can i use my orginal router or do i need a wirless 3g router.

I am on a 1500/256 adsl1 exetel plan, cost $43. So if i get a $40 wiless connection will this replace my home setup with the same reliablity and functionality

Thanks for the help. Just educating my self, which you need to do every year these days.

You can replace ADSL1 with a wireless service. You can run your laptop with a 3g modem plugged into the usb port quite simply. Depending on your location you might also need an antenna, and you can search this forum for several threads that give different solutions for a range of gains.

To run VoIP this way requires the laptop to be on all the time, and may also give you some networking difficulties with your present equipment (depending on your OS) if you need an ATA running off the laptop-mounted modem. Tn this case the best solution is a new router with built-in provision for the usb stick modem, such as this from Netcomm http://www.netcomm.com.au/products/3g/n3g002w

This solution (with heavy duty antenna as well) is illustrated at http://steve.blogs.exetel.com.au/index. ... 08/12.html and http://steve.blogs.exetel.com.au/index. ... 09/01.html

There is obviously a capital cost for router and ATA to compare with your current monthly bills. I haven't got an Open manual to check but you might be able to reuse it as a simple ATA.
