Huawei E1762 (7.2/384) vs Huawei E160 (3.6/384)

Post by SimonG » Thu Jan 07, 2010 6:26 pm

Was wondering if there is much benefit to going with the faster E1762 modem vs the slower E160 modem? Anyone got any comments or comparisons?

It depends on many different variables such as were you live, what you are going to be using it for etc. etc.

But in most real world examples you will not see a massive benefit from the more expensive modem *at the moment*. That is optus are constantly upgrading their network so some time in the future you may benefit from it. If the funds are a little tough then the 3.6 is more than adequate i have setup quite a few of these and have found no benifet from using my e169 (which is 7.2) at the same locations.

Here is a comparrison for you. Done minutes appart. Both @ 98% signal strength.

I am in Mornington, VIC @ 9:52pm.

This is the e169 connecting @ 7.2 Mbps

This is the e160 connecting @ 3.6

In this test the 3.6 modem beat the better e169

Hope this helps

I use VOIP with my 3G and found the the down & uploads on the E169 are considerably slower than I get with an E1762 modem. With VOIP calls and the E169, I could hear the other caller clearly (download) but they had difficulty in understanding me, every third word I spoke appeared to be getting lost. This suggested I needed faster uploads. The E1762 is rated 2mbps and while I get nowhere like that speed, the VOIP calls do seem better. Having said that the E1762 does seem to have an issue at times, where the modem displays cyan - so connected to tower, but no data is received or sent until I withdraw the dongle from the USB port then re-attach it. In other words a reboot.

I went for the 1762 and I'm glad I did because I have had speeds of 4.1Mbps which th 169 could not do. I also use Voip and it's been very very clear. Extra cost? Shop around!!
