New ADSL2 Plan Parameters

Post by ForumAdmin » Wed Jul 21, 2010 12:20 pm

When we see what happens over the next ten days in the ADSL@ marketplaces we will consider new Optus ADSL2 (inc and naked) plans that will have a 'split' off peak period of:

12 noon to 6 pm plus 3 am to 9 am (12 hours in total).

Any comments you would like to make will be welcome.

I like it, though I am on AAPT infrastructure. Anything for us?

The extra 6 hours should make up for the 3am start. Sounds much better than 2am-8am.

Spread the off-peak 'load' by having varying periods across different groups of plans/services.

Some plans/service as 3am - 9am & 12noon - 6pm
Some plans/service as 2am - 8am & 11am - 5pm
Some plans/service as 1am - 7am & 10am - 4pm
etc.

Applied as Mandatory not by Voluntary 'opt-in'.

Re-iterate to all that the off-peak periods are subject to change depending on network utilisation.

Having just had to move to one of the latest plans to avoid disconnection, it would be appreciated if the $10 change plan fee could be waived. They add up.

I think the split off peak period is a great idea.

The only suggestion is for you to define the download limits in off-peak. No ISP has unlimited periods any more unless they really do have the capacity and backbone to serve it.

You have said many times you don't want the customer attracted by an "Unlimited" plan. At the very least you will reduce the anti-Exetel threads on Whirlpool with a clearly defined offering.

I also like the idea of cheap, very cheap plans with no data allowance at all. Just like your NBN plans. Then just pay for ALL data at a low rate of 50cents a GB or less.

Yeah. Back to just $25 for ADSL1 line speed changes, otherwise $0 for normal ADSL1/ADSL2+ plan changes within the same plan type would be great.

I'd be happy with just $0 charge when forced off old plan.

During the last time the off peak issue was being discussed, I suggested a tiered system (viewtopic.php?f=288&t=32874&p=253102&hilit=tier#p253102). I had three reasons to divide the day into three tiers:

1. allow for business hours to have relatively uncongested bandwidth.
2. provide for the peak evening use
3. have a period that allows users to 'fill in' the rectangle

I think three tiers would do that (and to go with the new marketing speak being espoused, give them snazzy names). Eg:

Tier 1 - Business Continuity - 0700-1900 - current peak quota
Tier 2 - Evening Extravaganza - 1900-0200 - current peak quota
Tier 3 - can't-think-of-a-name - 0200-0700 - anywhere from T1+T2 to unlimited.

So slide the hours around, add what ever you think for the quotas but the idea is to make sure everyone 'perceives' that they are not going backwards. I also think that in the user pays model those on cheaper plans get less and a ratio for Tiers would be appropriate, eg:

Cost....T1......T2......T3
$30...10GB...10GB...60GB
$40...20GB...20GB...100GB
$60...50GB...50GB...150GB

I would like to see a set limit for the offpeak period...say 60gb (as is current for many old plans).

I can imagine the 12noon-6pm off peak being abused during school/uni holidays for example.

Split off-peak addresses the issue (find a way to provide 12 hours of off-peak) while still retaining some simplicity. It does, however, introduce more complexity into plans as there are now 4 time periods / switch overs.

Perhaps 2pm-8pm and 2am-8am would be better as it re-introduces some symmetry making it simpler to remember and more likely to pass the K.I.S.S. principle?

Perhaps retain the 2am-8am but give "rewards": After an allotted time (i.e. after 12 month contract expiry), the off-peak expands to 12am-12pm. Potentially avoids the adverse selection in that only "long-term" customers (and therefore, hopefully, the economically viable ones) get the more generous off-peak

OFF PEAK means periods when the network is used very little (in comparison).

It isn't some method of assigning periods of higher usage.

I wasn't aware that any Exetel customer was being 'forced' to change plans?

I was forced off my plan.. had to pay $10 aswell.. lost my 2am-2pm off peak..

I hate the new 2am-8am off peak.. i really want off peak to last to 12pm at least.. eg, 3am to 12pm would suit me perfectly i really hope exetel change it..
