Speed on Windows 10 machine

Post by ichabod » Tue Aug 04, 2020 8:56 pm

I have a FTTC 100/40 service and i use the standard ZTE router from Exetel to provide wifi to my laptop.

I have noticed that the download speeds I get from running speedtest on my Windows 10 laptop are much slower than the results I get when I run the test on my mobile phone:

PC results (53.7 Mbps d/l) : https://exetel.speedtestcustom.com/resu ... 684e7bc07d
Phone results (88.7 Mbps d/l) : https://exetel.speedtestcustom.com/resu ... d47ec65cf5

Initially I thought the variance was due to different hardware capabilities between the phone and the computer, but i connected my PC directly to the NBN box today with an ethernet cable and the download speed was the same as when I tested it via the wifi connection. I even tethered my phone's connection to the PC today, and still the download speed maxed out at about 55 Mbps (despite the phone giving a result of 90 just moments later)

GIven that my phone consistently achieves download speeds of 90 Mbps when connected to the wifi, the connection is seemingly capable and working fine. Because I get slower speeds on my PC even when connected to the NBN with an ethernet cable, the problem seems to be that my laptop is restricting the maximum speed. THe laptop is a WIndows 10 machine, using an Intel Wireless-AC 9560 adapter (802.11ac) that has the most up to date driver, and connects to the router using a 5G connection.

After googling for some help, I changed a few of the advanced settings in the adapter and also some other WIndows settings using netsh in the command line, but nothing has made a difference.

I do notice that when I run the speed test from my PC, the download speed always starts high (at around 90 Mbps) but then steadily reduces to around 55. On my phone, the download speed tends to do the opposite (starts at around 55 and climbs up to a max of ~90). Not sure if this is indicative of anything,

Can anyone help, or suggest some tweaks I can try? The speed is noticeably slower on my PC and it's driving me nuts. Thanks

Since you have mentioned that you are only experiencing slow speeds on your PC and not on your mobile phone, the issue seems to be related to your PC.

However, we are unable to confirm what the issue related to your PC could be given that we are unable to provide information / assistance in relation to 3rd party devices. We suggest you contact the support for the device manufacturer in order isolate and rectify this issue.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Yeah, that's exactly what I wrote. The connection itself is working fine, i was just hoping there may be some ideas or suggested tweaks to the adapter settings that people might be aware of to help rectify this. I'll try a different forum.

Having investigated this more, the speedtest results were slow only when i ran the test using Chrome. Using other browsers and the speed test app reported the expected download speed.

Having isolated the problem to Chrome, it turns out that the slow download speed was due to an extension – specifically, 'Video Downloader Plus by Skyload'

As soon as I disabled it, the download speed went back to normal.
