Remote access my home PC

Post by ManUtdFans » Mon Feb 22, 2010 11:01 am

ADSL2+.
NetGear modem router.

I want to access my home PC(XP SP3) from my work office PC(XP SP3), I tried to use Remote Desktop on my office PC accessing my home PC's IP but no luck.

Anything I need to to inside my home PC?

Many office firewalls block RDP port (3389) anyway.

There are ways around this:
Some workplaces allows access to sites like logmein or other utilities that use proxy services (eg TeamViewer) over common ports (eg 80 or 443)
For the more hands-on, look it into SSH tunneling (if work doesn't block port 23 - otherwise also needed through common ports like 443)

The other thing you may need to bear in mind is port forwarding on your router, to ensure that the RDP traffic actually makes it to the PC. Each modem handles this slightly differently, however most modem manuals are quite good at giving information as to how this is done.

the latest version of dot net (if you have installed the update) breaks RDP, suggest trying it on your LAN first to ensure you have it working
