how to network and secure it

Hi,
I have networked my old Laptop to my desktop using a NETGEAR WG111v2 in the laptop, it works well hubby can surf the net while I am on the desktop.
The thing is, I need to secure the network... I have read in the Billion manual that I need to rename the SSID and turn off broadcasting.
Do I have to do WEP password as well?
Also, How will the Laptop be able to access the internet if I have passworded it all?
I apologize for all the questions but, I am completely at sea with networking.
Regards Granny

Use WPA2 if your laptop supports it (more than likely does unless it is very very old), WEP is not secure at all, once you add a password to the router you'll get prompted by the laptop to enter the password

don't bother turning off SSID broadcasting, it does absolutely nothing for security and only serves to add inconvenience for yourself

choose a strong password (not a dictionary word) and you'll be fine using WPA2 (WPA is ok too if your laptop doesn't support WPA2)

Hi Jokiin,
Thank you.
Will just setting wpa2 stop others using my internet? I am asking as I seem to have had a fair bit of usage which I don't normally have.
After setting the password in the router, do I start up the Laptop and it will then ask me for the password ...is that right?
Also do I need to give the router a name e.g. change the default essid?
Regards Granny

if you put a decent password in there they'll just move on to an easier target, the laptop will prompt for the password once you try connecting to the wireless network again, there's no real need to change the router name but no harm in changing it either

Hi Jokiin,
Thank you again for your help.
I have done the password... a really long one like Dazzled recommended in one of the posts here.
I have started the Laptop up and put the password in, then I closed it off and started it again wonderful no problems.
Have a great evening
Regards Granny
