A connection to the remote computer could not be established

I've been using HSPA on an E169 USB modem for a few weeks now, and for the most part it's been ok. I get the occasional dropout, but most annoying is how long it can take sometimes attempting to establish a connection. I get the message "A connection to the remote computer could not be established, so the port used for this connection was closed.". This can persist for a long time (up to an hour), though seems may be related to peak traffic periods. So my question is, is this the message you get when the 3g tower is congested? I searched the forums, and nowhere has anybody indicated this connection error relates to congestion.. I am rarely able to connect the first time successfully, typically takes 2 connection attempts or more. Signal strength is typically 90%+ (when connected).

When I attempt to run the USB modem through a DLink 451 router, it can be especially frustrating, because I think this routers retry connection functionality is a bit flaky. Sometimes it simply refuses to connect, and no amount of waiting seems to fix it - but then running E169 directly from USB port will connect after a few tries.

I've also noticed it's a bit of a lottery when it comes to online games using P2P, even with all Australian players. They might show a ping of 250ms in the lobby, then it sometimes goes to 3+ seconds in the game and remains unplayable (meaning stays at this level for entire game session). Could there be a configuration issue causing this problem (vista, default firewall configuration, no router). If I keep the online games small (1 open P2P connection to another player), don't seem to have a problem. Suspect it relates to packet loss and trying to keep all players synchronised. I get the impression moderate packet loss is to be expected on wireless (or at least somewhat greater than wired connection).

From the Exetel website - http://www.exetel.com.au/residential-hs ... mation.php
"and therefore HSPA, at least at this time in its development is not suitable for people who want large downloads (it definitely is NOT suitable for people who use P2P) or who want to play low latency sensitive games"

Yeah I had certainly read comments on those lines. I wasn't sure if low latency sensitive games covered first person shooters (where timing is critical), or basically all games (RTS / WoW etc). I thought the P2P issue was simply limiting to 32kb/s, nothing that should throttle a p2p game session.

In my case it didn't matter either way, as I cannot get any form of wired broadband where I live right now - even though I'm less than 10 minutes from Brisbane CBD
