Ubuntu 9.04 and kernel update - driver problem

Post by petemoss » Fri Aug 07, 2009 11:25 am

After upgrading to kernel 2.6.28-14-generic #47-Ubuntu , I have not been able to connect with the Huawei E169 .

This is NOT an Exetel problem or an Optus problem, but a Ubuntu one, and knowing that quite a few people use ubuntu with Exetel, am posting this here.

Even booting to the old kernel fails to connect. However, as it's a driver thing, I have been able to 'connect' by pulling out the USB cable leading to the modem, then wait 10 seconds or so for Ubuntu to unload drivers , etc, and then plug in the USB cable again, and it connects just fine.

HTH

It is a known bug. I have heard a report that 2.6.31 999 generic has a fix, but don't take my word for it. I'll keep my eye out for what has happened.

PS - Pete, if you bring up the grub menu at boot, you will usually be given the option of loading past kernels.

PPS - Your unplug method seems to work for others also. Make a udev rule?

In case you want to experiment with kernels, here is the latest Ubuntu collection - http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/

Yes, I tried that today, but it made no difference, which is strange. It was on a reboot, maybe it should have been power down, then reboot, but you would think everything would be unloaded on reboot.

I wouldn't have a clue how to do that, Dazzled. :)

I'm not that game, could be high risk of other apps breaking I think.

Thanks Dazzled. He is using Karmic, which is one version higher than 9.04, and no doubt it wouldn't even be at beta stage yet would it ? Bit risky, the cable 'replug' worked okay, in fact, tonight I powered up, and it connected straight away, ......... work that one out, eh, no changes to the system at all (no updates, etc).

Thanks,

Pete

Pulling out the USB cable and re-connecting must have just been a co-incidence. Can't use Ubuntu to connect, have had to resort to XP. :(

Booting to older kernels does not work either.
