Signal strength.

I am using HSPA internet access via my Nokia N95 phone as a modem. I am on the fringe range from the Optus 3G tower located at Goolwa, South Australia. I have problems with signal strength and connection quality/dropouts. I have read about the yagi antenna success and plans offered by Exetel and would like to take advantage of this. My concern is when i sit under the tower accessing the internet there is little improvement. The 3G symbol does not come up on the phone as well which makes me wonder if indeed it is a true 3G tower. I have tried a 7 and 11db gain aerial connected to the phone via a generic cradle with little improvement. Any ideas!

I believe the N95 is 3G / HSPA 2100 only. If you're not seeing 3G at all, my guess is you're sitting under one of the 900MHz Optus towers.

The N95 users guide states the phone is approved for use on GSM 850,900,1800and 1900 and UMTS 2100 networks. Thanks.

Ahuh. GSM 900 is not the same as UTMS / HSDPA 900 - quite confusing when you're new to this stuff.

Perhaps try an E160 and a 2.1GHz dish if you're near a 2.1g tower, or the $45 Exetel Yagi if you're near a 900 tower. Perhaps you can borrow one from a mate or agent to test.
