Won't connect or connect no browsing

Postby mogwaiboi on Tue May 11, 2010 9:30 pm

G'day

I recently set up pre-paid wireless for a friend. Half of the time it won't connect, or if it does connect it takes a good 5-6 minutes before she can browse any sites. Sometimes it connects with 5 bars reception and sometimes only 1 bar...frustrating!!! She's in Wantirna Sth, Victoria...any ideas??? Thanks in advance :D

Is there line of sight to the Optus transmitter, and no metal roof overhead? Assuming you are using a laptop, walk about until you find where the signal is best. Sometimes all that is then needed is to plug the modem into a usb extension cord, and put it in a better location, such as near a window. There is also a range of small indoor antennae that can boost the signal.

Yes we tried moving it around on a usb cable and also tried an antennae...no luck.

Odd for somewhere so flat. Not like North Shore, Sydney, for example, where large areas have zero reception because of the terrain. I notice on the ACMA site that Optus has transmissions from Wantirna Reservoir Mountain Highway, and from the reserve at Stud Rd Scoresby, if that helps.
