Huawei e160e and Ubuntu 10.04

Post by kerryww » Thu Jun 17, 2010 5:36 pm

Hi all,

Has anyone have any tips, tricks or luck in getting a Huawei E160E to work with Ubuntu 10.04?

I've tried every config. possible but still no love.

TIA

I'd be surprised if it doesn't, as most Huawei models I have seen work on Karmic and Lucid, just using Network Manager (the icon in the corner; select Exetel in the menu and Bob's your uncle). There is a list at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/ ... nformation but 160e isn't specifically listed with 10.04. Has it been used with Virgin?

The E1762 works a treat.
PS Are you using a 64 bit version of Ubuntu?

Works fine for me, same dongle same ubuntu, right click on network manager >Edit connections >click on the wireless broadband tab >click add >name the connection whatever you like, make sure that *99# is in the number box and exetel1 is in the APN box, click apply and close, thats it.
Now left click network manager and select (whatever you named the connection), should just go.

Hope that helps, post again if it doesn't

Interesting... for me, it "just worked" with 9.04.

But now, whether from a live 10.04 CD or an upgraded 9.04 to Lucid 10.04 installed version, it does not work. The installed version even has the wireless broadband entry still there (in Edit Connections), but "Exetel" no longer appears when the network manager icon is clicked.

It seems that maybe it's an Ubuntu issue not recognising the E160E, rather than a setting for the Exetel connection.

Looks like a bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/546728

But anyway, I'd not updated my installed 10.04 for quite a while, so I just now ran System|Update Manager, installed all the updates (not sure just what it did), rebooted, and after that the Network Manager listed my "Exetel" network and succesfully connected.

Might be a coincidence, but worth a try.

Hey thanks folks,

Wow, fast reply, can't thank everyone enough.

I did as Munk suggested - "make sure that *99# is in the number box and exetel1 is in the APN box"
I also left out the username and password - bang, I was connected.

We're leaving tomorrow for a weeks holiday at Nambucca Heads. We've rented a shack on the beach, no phone, no internet.

Going a week without the internet - worse than a week with no beer.

Thanks again,

Kerry
