Wireless Broadband WiFi Modems

Postby manwe on Mon Jun 28, 2010 5:32 pm

So, being the owner of a non 3G iPad I'm wondering what if any wifi modems are compatible with Exetels Wireless broadband service? Are there any options as cheap as the Virgin options?

Presuming you mean a 3G modem/router that has WiFi included, you'd be looking at something like this Netgear product:

I'm sure pretty much any of the major brands would have something similar.

As far as compatibility, as long as it accepts a normal 3G sim card, you should be right.

As well as the routers from the usual sources, there is this little Huawei one port wireless job sold in Three shops - http://www.three.com.au/cs/ContentServe ... 1530703114 You plug a standard Huawei modem into the USB port, and you have a wireless router. See for example http://www.slashgear.com/huawei-d100-ro ... k-0224894/. Exetel users have posted here.

Naah. I'm looking for something like this:

http://www.virginmobile.com.au/Shop/Pro ... -Broadband

I'm just not sure where I can get an unlocked one cheap that works with exetel.

I use a Netcomm MyZone with an Exetel HSPA service, with extremely good results.

Just acquired 3g wireless-n router TP-Link MR3420 from Excel Computers and was able to connect without any fuss using an Exetel E1762 usb modem (APN exetel1). Even with a long USB extension cable the signal strength and connection stability do not seem to be quite as good as when the USB modem is connected directly to laptop.... possibly need a 3g aerial. The MR-3420 documentation has a long list of modems said to be compatible. The unit has extensive options for bandwidth control (QoS) etc.
