After calling the Exetel helpdesk this morning to report that I could not get my Huawei E169 HSPDA modem to work on either a Windows 7 or MAC OS 10.6.4, I was given the following instructions (I have never had problems on a Windows XP machine)

Please go through the below link in order to download the latest software for Huawei E169.

This page also has updates for other Huawei modems as well

The advice given to me has solved my problem for the Windows 7 machine but I am still unable to get my Huawei E169 HSPDA modem to work on the MAC OS 10.6.4 machine.

The file at this link is not recognised by the MAC - is there some special way of using it for the MAC that I have missed

Does anyone out there have any advice that might help.

Thanks for that info. I wonder how many people tried it and found that it worked for them...
a) The firmware update: while named, "e169update.exe," this fails - possibly because it is looking for an HSDPA *Card* and not a USB modem.
b) *I* fail - because I am so unused to WIndows after years with Linux that I'm blowed if I know how to add the magic APN "exetel1" anywhere within W7's "Create a new connection" wizard. That, I am 100% sure, would do the trick.

Even Microsoft's Help file instructs you to "insert the APN" - and then sends the confused user in hyper-linked circles without explaining where to insert the APN!

Their online help is little better:
"If prompted, [!!!] type the access point name (APN) or access string, the user name, and the password. (You can find these in the information that came with the device or with your mobile broadband service.)" http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... e-Internet
[Prompt me, Windows 7, prompt me!!]

Now it seems to me that the Optus-repackaged "Mobile Partner" software (which usually references Windows connections) has probably been set up to automate a script so as to input Optus's APN. Maybe they've done a deal with Exetel and included the Exetel "exetel1" APN - but, at face value, it looks like we've got a whole Optus setup here - Not Exetel.

Although this doesn't help your problem - the E169 I bought from Exetel awhile back for my MacBook autoloaded an Optus dmg file to set up the broadband, and I was able to enter the exetel1 APN. (Note that it autoloaded a windows exe on a windows machine.)

However, I soon got caught up with the whole how do I upgrade the E169, where do I get non-branded software from (the Huawei site is difficult to navigate), etc, loop.

So I bought a Netcomm MyZone 3G modem wifi adaptor, moved the Exetel SIM across to it, and stuck the E169 in a drawer. Happy ever after - no software to load on client machines, just configure the wireless connection to connect to the MyZone when it detects it.

EDIT: for clarity - the APN setting is done in the Optus Mobile Partner software.

Thanks, Klaas
I have also considered consigning my e169 to the drawer.
Until then, I have plugged it into my Netcomm Mobile data router so Windows can connect to the net - wirelessly. For me, that's not a real solution. I spend much of my life on the road.

That's why I settled on the MyZone - it's about credit card sized, battery/usb powered. Turn it on, wait a few seconds, then I can connect with laptop, iPhone, etc, wirelessly. No need to set up any additional software on the laptop. Access to configuring the MyZone is done through a web interface, and it nicely carrier agnostic.
