Sometimes get fax tone when calling an Exetel VOIP number

Post by EdgyDave » Wed Oct 15, 2008 7:38 pm

When I call my Exetel VOIP number from my mobile phone, usually I will hear the ring tone OK, but about one out of every 4 - 5 calls I will get a fax tone instead (and the phone doesn't ring). But I don't have a fax!

I don't know for sure if this would happen if I call from a land line. But I expect it wouldn't make any difference.

I am using a linksys SPA3102 ATA. Has anyone else come across this problem?

I was getting the same problem as you are and also sometimes an engaged signal when calling into my own VOIP phone.

A reboot of my router fix the problem. BUT, the actual problem is that I am not going to call into my VOIP phone everyday to check if there is a problem. There isn't any indication that this problem exist until someone tries to call in. During the problem I was able to make out bound calls just fine.

Cos, nice to know I'm not the only one! Are you using a VOIP ATA plus modem or an IAD? If you have the same ATA as me (SPA3102), that could be a big clue as to where the problem lies. On the other hand, I suppose it's possible it's a network issue that sometimes routes my call to some punter's fax machine! Seems unlikely though.

i had this once, but not since.

i have noticed it can do all sorts of funny things, particularly when the service is not registered at the time of amusement - but i have only recently had other connection issues to contend with. perhaps time for more voip self testing so i can lodge a usefully worded ticket (if needed).

I am using a modem, nb9wmaxxx, and a normal hand held.

as karlos said, it happens when the phone or modem isn't registered to the VOIP system. but ironically at the time, I was still able to make outbound calls. I don't believe it is a hardware thing.

Yesterday I tried 10 calls from the mobile, and 10 from a landline. Worked normally every time  . So I think the problem has gone away. Maybe it was only during the first day or so after registration. If it ever happens again or I find out anything more about this issue, I'll update this post. Thanks cos & karlos for your feedback, much appreciated.

Me too! When I tried to call my VOIP number from my mobile yesterday, I got a fax tone. Why is that?

My father said when he tried to call me last week he also got a fax tone. He was also calling from his mobile, not sure if that has any bearing though.

I'd love to try switch through a fax machine to see where it connects to. :)

Hi Exetel Staff,

Does one of us need to raise a support ticket, or is this thread enough?

Many thanks, Mike. :D :D :D

I would certainly be raising a support ticket. Remember to post a link to this thread in the ticket.

Guys, got your emails already, and currently investigating this problem.

11:48 am - I've tested a few DID this morning. Some random occasion, i got this fax tone (about 1 out of 15 calls) not sure why yet, but i'll keep this up to date.
