Want to go VOIP but which unit?
Hi,
Can someone point in the right direction as to what wireless/modem/router/voip to purchase.
A friend had mentioned Billion and that he no problems with his VOIP.
I saw a rebadged Billion called a 'OPEN Networks 824RLW' but read a review saying there was some VOIP problems and firmware needed updating.
or should I just go for a NETGEAR DG834GV?
Cheers

Billion firmware is designed for a universal marketplace, and configuration is on the complex side. VoIP has problems with some versions. The low-cost Open will present update problems. Why not go with something simple that is already configured for this country - and that includes Netcomm? If you have set up routers before, there is nothing confronting about a separate ATA.

I have been using a Netcomm V210P ATA for sometime and had no hassles. Easy to setup and seems reliable.

Re: Want to go VOIP but which unit?
I have a GN-BR01G wireless router and a NB-1 modem. I have always had problems with my GN-BR01G so I was hoping to get a new wireless router set up & s voip unit. So an all in one box seems to be the best bet.
But not unless I will have VOIP problems, if that is case then the V210P ATA might be the way to go.

I have bought the Open modem for 6 people (family and friends) in the last 6 months.
All use Voip and wireless and don't report problems (and they would I assure you!).

As long as you use codec G.711 with that unit you should be ok
firmware can be upgraded but you will break the warranty, up to you to take the risk

Good choice. I've been using a Billion 7404VGP for years with VOIP and not a single problem with VOIP in that time. Be aware that the Billions used to (don't know about now) ship with power supplies that were sensitive to mains power noise. I used to have problems every week or two, then I moved across town and maybe had 2 problems in 2 years with the Billion crashing. They seem a very good unit for the money.

The modem and wireless are far superior to my previous Gigabite unit. Now I can watch iView on my laptop with no dropouts!!
But I am still ironing out the voip. So can't give a 100% rating just yet.

Re: Want to go VOIP but which unit?
Billions are good routers but for VoIP they are quite problematic.
Re: Want to go VOIP but which unit?
I don't know that they are problematic as such (have improved a lot with recent firmware) but they definitely contain too many parameters for the average end user to contend with and not always that logical, I wouldn't personally recommend them for most usersDazzled wrote:Billions are good routers but for VoIP they are quite problematic.
