(to me) it sounds firewall/NAT related, I would be having a second look at the settings in your router, I see that you have been having trouble, have you inadvertently changed a setting perhaps? If your router has the option try temporarily adding your ATA to the DMZ and see if the problem remains, suggest rebooting router and ATA after committing any changes also

Well, today's update, after my successful updating of the router FW, and susequent test, managed to make a couple of international calls today without a problem! 1 chat was over an hour and clear as a bell so, for now, the problem appears to be resolved!

Thanks for all the help!

could be the update process that sorted that out, anyway as long as it's working it's all good

Good news. Some time ago Netcomm released new firmware for these modem-routers because of iptables (NAT firewall) difficulties with an ATA (I think it was one of the older Sipura models - yours is fairly recent).

If it ever happens again, go back to the start of this thread and configure a DMZ. Then firewall niceties don't matter.

The V220 has 2 FXS ports, so 2 VoIP phones are supported. Unfortunately there is no pass-through for an ordinary PSTN phone as well on the same handset. That's the V210P model.

Arggh! :x Back to the 30 second cutoff again! Setup the DMZ host with the ATA's IP, still cutting off. I thought technology was supposed to make our lives easier!

Oh no. Assuming you have done all the config correctly, I'm getting short of ideas. You have a common modem and one of the simplest ATAs there is and it's usually a doddle. There are thousands of VoIP users here, and apart from the Billion owners, few write in.

If it works for some days and then gets crook, without any hardware being fiddled with during that time, I'm inclined to think you should write to support. They can see part of what's happening from their end, and perhaps determine which packet isn't getting through.

DMZs are usually foolproof, as they put your ATA in direct contact with the internet, so ports 5060-61 (2 line handshakes) and 60000 to 60008 (audio) are taken care of. Once configured and running, you can keep in touch with the ATA setup from your phone, eg #126# will tell you the internal IP address (see p 60 of the manual). If you think that the IP address might not be constant, set a static IP address within the router range 192.168.1.x at the ATA and configure the DMZ to suit.

Righto, went with tech support, he had me change the SIP Expire Time. User guide for the v220 specified 240, tech supp. said go with 3600. Now, I had tried jacking it up to 80000, but to no avail. The change to 3600 seems to have solved it as far as my 1 minute test goes. I'll be interested to see if I can get longer calls out of it but my hopes are high.
