Noise on Incoming PSTN

Post by Greg2234 » Wed Aug 22, 2012 8:58 pm

VOIP and incoming PSTN were working fine. VOIP in and out are still good but incoming PSTN through modem have excessive noise making it almost impossible to talk. We are using NB9WMAXX and a central filter. PSTN answered on other phone are fine. Any suggestions for a fix apart from buying a new modem. Thanks

VoIP runs over the net, and the modem normally just passes PSTN straight through (you might even hear a relay click). To check your equipment, try:
1 swapping handsets;
2 plugging the phone directly to the wall socket the modem uses. Disconnect the modem and omit the filter.
3 do it again with the filter fitted.

If the bare line is noisy, report it to Support for attention to the line.

Edit: Sorry about the filter comment; you probably can't omit it.

Thanks for your reply
1 Swapped phones no change
2 Works fine when not going through modem
If we disconnect ADSL line from modem there is no noise when we answer phone connected through modem.

Just asking the obvious: do you have an ADSL filter/splitter in between the modem and the wall socket like in page 11 of http://media.netcomm.com.au/public/asse ... AXX_UG.pdf?

If not, you'll need one. If so, is it easy to try a replacement one? Perhaps one borrowed from elsewhere?

Yes we have a central filter hardwired in.
Yesterday I bought a new modem NB9Wmaxxn and all is now fixed.
Thanks Greg
