NF1ADV Net works but VOIP drops out

Post by macgreer » Tue Nov 18, 2014 11:40 am

Hi all,
I have a Netcomm NF1ADV & lately I find the VOIP keeps dropping out.
Internet keeps working.
While VOIP not working can't log onto router.
Once I restart router all is well - VOIP works & can log on, but only for an intermittent time, then drops out again.
Also PSTN pass through stops working and no incoming calls at all.

VoIP is only an application running on the device OS, so a voice drop shouldn't in theory affect a router function which is at the heart of the OS.

There was a firmware update a while ago. Is yours the latest? That's the first thing to check.

PS Re VOIP not working can't log onto router, can you ping it?

Hi Dazzled
Have latest firmware, can ping it
I put filters on the phone lines coming out of the router this arvo as well as the filter splitter that was already between wall plug & router. So original filter may be dead - I will see if I get drop outs still, but it seems I may have found the problem.
Thanks

Hi Dazzled

All working fine for a while, but stopped, now I can't log onto router, but can ping it.
VOIP down as well.
Once I restart router, everything fine.

Like all these devices it is a small computer running a specially stripped down Linux operating system. The internal permanent memory chips are set up as a file system (simulating drives), and it loads into memory and boots like any other computer, though in a very small space.

The "router" part that handles network traffic is a core part of the OS, and appears to function if you are getting a reply from ping. Linux logs everything (or a bit less, depending on the log level you have set in the config).

Both VoIP and the browser interface on port 80 are applications running on the OS, and these are malfunctioning. The browser interface is probably talking to this little gem - http://acme.com/software/micro_httpd/, for example.

If you could read the log files you might get some inkling of what's going on. The problem is rebooting will delete them. If you can get the log before the interface shuts up shop it would be helpful. The usual thing that closes the modem and VoIP functions is a line noise error - these applications simply log an error and stop. External noise doesn't shut down the separate internal interface. A PSTN input signal with many combined devices triggers a relay (hear the click) that connects the phone direct (so the PSTN input line must have a filter)

There is another interface. In a terminal or DOS prompt, try the command telnet 192.168.1.1. If you are running Windows you may have to enable telnet. Telnet uses port 23 which hopefully is being responded to.

If the computer even part functions, you will be asked to log in. Do so as the usual admin. In most Netcomms, typing ? will get a help summary. Cross fingers there may be a way to get the logs easily. (I don't have one here to run through it, and Netcomm doesn't publish the details).

I have heard of these symptoms with the old firmware (do a Google), but not with the current system.

Thanks
telnet is not recognised, but I have the following log from the router which might have a clue?

I hope you appreciated the job that's being done to stifle port scan intruders - all those in 7 minutes - note that some are external port 23 scans looking for a telnet back door. Run whois on the SRC= address if you are curious as to where from. The last is a China Telecom IP.

I leave my logs on Warning level - it saves a lot of guff. The only thing that rings obvious bells to me is the Linux kernel warning that SIP is disabled by config. What is your VoIP config?

Thanks for your help - router has just dropped out again & needed restart

They are a bit tough for my eyesight. You may have blanked some bits or not filled them in. Netcomm have supplied a configure document at http://media.netcomm.com.au/public/asse ... Exetel.pdf. Where they say sip1.exetel.com.au use 58.96.1.2 and save a DNS lookup.
