Voip constantly rings PSTN????

Post by mrwoodbrick » Sun Jan 25, 2015 10:10 pm

Hi folks,
I am experiencing a very annoying issue with Netcomm VOIP modem. When I plug my phone line into the modem so that I can receive PSTN or VOIP calls, I get consistent "phantom" calls on my PSTN number.

If I plug the phone directly into the line (via a filter) I get none of the phantom calls. The PSTN works (but no VOIP) :(
If I unplug the phone line into the modem, I get none of the phantom calls. The VOIP works fine (but no PSTN) :(

I called Exetel who said that the issue may be caused by "hackers," but that still leaves me in the dark as to what to do about it, if that is the case....

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.....

Voip constantly rings PSTN????

Hi Mr WoodBrick,

I have read the inquiry you have posted and assume that if it was supposed to be hackers or bot attacks in other words you should be able to experience this issue even when the PSTN is unplugged from the Netcomm modem and only when the VOIP is plugged into the Netcomm.

If there is a possibility it would be great if you are able to start by factory resetting the modem first and testing the same scenario stage by stage. Failing which the an optional test would be to test a different modem, but if that is not a possibility then we would need to seek some advise from our senior engineers.

Regards,

Hi Imran. Thanks for posting.

Well thanks for clarifying that hacking/ bot attacks would ring my VOIP number and not my PSTN line. That's what I thought. I am fairly sure it is the PSTN line that is ringing, due to description in original post. I have factory reset the modem and reconfigured. So far this is working. I have not had a call for a couple of days now.

I have also set up "Night Mode" on our panasonic cordless phones to alleviate the worst of the annoyance should it reappear.

The situation is now being monitored. I will update this post should I have more instances and I will definitely be forensic about isolating the issue. I have also set the modem log to "debug" mode to see if it can tell me anything if the "phantom calls" reappear.

Thanks again.

Just a follow up to this issue:

I tried a factory reset on the netcomm modem; no success.
I also tried various line filters. Again, this did not help.
Eventually, I unplugged the PSTN line and lived with VOIP only until I could justify replacing my modem.

I have now replaced the modem and so far there are now no issues with the PSTN line. As to why this issue occurred remains a mystery....

Did you have a filter on the PSTN line into the modem? You should. Most splitters have a built in filter on one side.
