Someone could have had your number in the past? They recycle unused numbers after 6 months, or one of your friends is playing a joke on you.

These scammers should be outlawed, I don't know how they continue to get away with it

Not sure if this is related for you, but you may wish to read http://forum.exetel.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=26866. The last post indicates that it is possible to receive reimbursement from these sorts of scams

These bastards continue to hide behind the major telephone carriers who continue to share in the profits. I have managed to track one of them down in the past and extracted compensation out of them, there are threads on Whirlpool to help you track them down.

What pisses me off is how you get stonewalled by the carriers on who and where these criminals are, first they bullshit they don't know who they are. When you press the issue that they take they money from your phone bill and actually pay them, they then pull out the old privacy act crap.

Now it will be interesting to see how Exetel can handle this problem, granted they are on the food chain by being a customer of Vodafone, but will they have enough clout to force the issue to identify these criminals on our behalf?

There's a challenge for Exetel try to make their service SCAM FREE and protect us from these criminals! :D
The views I present are that of my own and NOT of any organisation I may belong to.

Well the TIO has advised me to take the matter up with my mobile telephone company and give them the opportunity to resolve the matter,so hopefully that will happen .
If not then back to the TIO.

what a pain in the butt!!!
How can these bastards just take your money like that!

I would have thought it worked like this: Telephone carrier bill the client. Telephone carrier is billed by the service. Telephone carrier holds payment, citing that the charge was put through without authorisation from the client. Telephone carrier waits for proof that the service was ordered/authorised.
