Hi, Im about to purchase a motorola v3xx it has hsdpa, gprs and edge capability, I want to connect the phone to my laptop to access the internet. my question is what data are you supplying for me to do this. And do I need a data plan or if I use my phone as a modem can I access the internet on my mobile X plan.

You can use data on the mobile plans in exactly the same way as the HSPA plans. Coverage and speeds will be different (can be better or worse) as the mobile plans use Vodafone (possibly changing in the near future??) while HSPA is on Optus. Hardware requirements are all the same, unless you have a device that's locked to one network or the other. Data prices are much higher on mobile plans though - last time I checked $0.07/MB base, or a shade less if you buy a datapack, vs $0.015 for HSPA plans. Against that the low-use mobile plan has no minimum charge vs $5 for HSPA so the mobile can still work out cheaper for very low use.
