Flaky reception

I live 1km from the centre of Chatswood (albeit down a hill, so no line-of-sight) and normally get reliable 4G coverage with at least a few bars of reception. However, for the past few weeks it has been 1 bar, regular swapping to 3G and many calls dropping out.

I have configured the Mobile Data to use only the 3G network... I don't know if this makes any difference, but this week the reliability of calls has improved and I have one to two bars of reception. I wondered if there are any other settings (on an iPhone 5s) that I might improve the reception. I'm not exactly in the Styx!
