Underwhelmed With ADSL2+

Hi, I'm on on the INCPHONE A
plan for adsl2+ , have been since October, and have been meaning to audit my speed for some time now buuuut, I find all the terminology mostly incomprehensible, and I used to work in IT

Anyways, since I've had ADSL2+ I haven't had the feeling of blazing speed in my upgrade. It doesn't feel any faster than my adsl 1 for the extra money.
Please could somebody make sense of the information I've posted here. I'll need some hand-holding and explanation

Your stats are about the same as mine. You are getting 6Mbps download, which is 4 times a 1.5 connection. Your sync rate is just below the 8M which is theoretically possible on ADSL1.

Line speed and throughput are mostly effected by distance. There are a few things to help but you should be very happy performing most tasks at 6Mbps.

I am surprised, though, that you say you are paying more for ADSL2 than you were for ADSL1. Nearly every case I have seen has ADSL2 much cheaper than ADSL1, especially for the same quotas.

What about your connection doesn't feel like an improvement? General browsing usually doesn't.

It's better than you could get from ADSL1 for the money. Only a minority of ADSL2 users would get sigificantly faster.

You mostly only notice high broadband speeds when downloading files from a fast server. Few ordinary web sites can deliver at your speed, so you won't notice any great difference in normal browsing.

So i'm getting better than adequate speed then..

dbr, what are the few things that could help out in optimizing my settings? I'm not familiar with all of this so please forgive the basic nature of my enquiries

For example what do the different annex settings mean? Currently it's on annex A, but I have the choice of 'open annex type and follow dslam's setting', annex A, annex L , M and J.

Could you explain what 'just below the 8M' means?

The best way to see the maximum for your line is to perform an isolation test. Remove every device from any phone outlet in the house. Connect ONLY the modem using the shortest cable you have to the first phone socket. Now try the speed tests.

The 8M was my shorthand for 8 Mega bits per second (8Mbps) which is equivalent to 8000 Kilo bits per second (8000 kbps) which is the approximate maximum for a non throttled ADSL1 line. You are connecting just below this at 7658 kbps, which is pretty good. Not too many lines get better than this even on ADSL2.

Annex M is only provided by a few ISPs. As far as I know it improves some area of delivery. I can't remember which (try google if you are interested). It is not enabled on the Exetel network. So Annex A is fine.

G.DMT is ADSL1 mode for modems. Set yours to ADSL2+ or auto or similar.

I am underwhelmed too, but it's not Exetel's fault and I know I have definitely got a line issue. 100 Metres from exchange and I can only achieve 4Mbit. But this was the case with Previous ADSL2+ Supplier so I know it's not them. When it becomes an issue I will raise a ticket to get the line checked out. Till then I am happy

After Isolating my modem here are some stats: First is a ping to Exetel, second is a traceroute to Telstra. I ran the traceroute twice with the same result once to 144.135.19.10 and once to 144.135.18.10

The short answer is because phpBB requires you to be logged in to post.

Are you rather complaining that you are not automatically logged in? In this case check that you have ticked the option to do so when you log in, and also check your cookie settings.

Marcus, if you don't want to keep cookies for any reason, an easy alternative to the auto login mentioned by GIdget above is to use Opera, and set the wand to log in automatically as soon as the site is loaded. It's a top browser anyway, and totally user-configurable and "scriptable".

Re your tests, I don't feel underwhelmed, as you are not worse than average. Speed is driven largely by Telstra's copper length and condition. If you use properly configured specialist downloading software you will invariably max out your downloads.

I'm using Safari on OS X with default settings. I tick the keep me logged in checkbox, but my login won't stick. Works everywhere else...
