Best Timed Download Programs

As a help to other customers it might be good to post the urls of these sorts of programs and why you think they are better than other choices.

Should this thread be an extension of the discussion here http://forum.exetel.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=31664 or should it be a list of applications? A wiki page for each of Mac, Linux, and Windows might be the best long-term solution.

A list of suitable applications would be best - with any discussion referred to/moved to the thread you reference - otherwise there will be too much "noise" on this thread to make it a useful reference.
A wiki page for each of Mac, Linux, and Windows might be the best long-term solution.
Agreed.

Free Download Manager: http://www.freedownloadmanager.org

I think this is the best current Windows download manager. I have trialled about 3 or 4 different ones and Free Download Manager supports a superset of all their features, including scheduling capabilities and segmented downloading, while simultaneously maintaining a small and efficient footprint (in memory and disk space). It also has a lot of nifty other features too, including torrent support (though uTorrent or Deluge would still be my torrent client recommendations), streaming video downloading for Youtube, etc and website spidering

I use Windows Task Scheduler. It is in the Control Panel.
You "Add New Task", choose the program you want to load and use the Advanced Options to "Wake this computer to perform this task".

Then you just "Hibernate" your computer (one of the 3 shutdown options, Hold SHIFT when you choosing a Shutdown/Standby choice and you will see the word Standby change to Hibernate).

Now... your computer will turn on at the right time and download.
If your downloading program has options to "Hibernate after downloads complete" (uTorrent does) then you are set!. You won't have to leave your computer on all night to waste power(energy/pollution/money).

Mac OS X

Quick n' dirty.

1] Have Transmission already running, just beginning to download a file or files.

2] Go to System Preferences and follow these screenshots.

Click the "Schedule..." button. Ignore my Sleep settings, they get overridden if there's an active download anyway.

4] Put Computer to Sleep

I use Free Download Manager as linked by Corey. By far the best download manager I've used. I even use it to schedule downloads for my old man and little brother at home to download off me during off-peak (via password protected HFS), download manager will input username and passwords when needed. Very handy.

As for torrents, I use utorrent.. It has an incredible scheduler that can be overrid on a per torrent basis from a right click menu. Handy when the missus just can't wait for that Anime fansub. ;)
