When posting that you are experiencing "slow speeds at midnight" please be aware that Exetel constrains the use of P2P from midnight (EST or EDST) to 1 am every day very severely to ameliorate the affect of people who, despite being given a 12 hour period, always start downloads at that time.
Posting that your P2P is slow at midnight will not get a response because it will always be slow.
If you use P2P then please schedule your downloads after 3 am.

Re: P2P Downloads At Midnight
Why dont Exetel just buy enough bandwidth. Then their wouldnt be a problem
Re: P2P Downloads At Midnight
Omo|Perth, Have you spent one or two minutes thinking about the many places and ways congestion shows up? P2P overnight downloads dominate (read "overload") Australian traffic at all parts of the system, and aren't particularly speed sensitive. If you really need that file right now, like lightning, why are you using P2P? You don't even need it for dodgy music, where it exposes you to copyright lawyers.

Define Enough..Omo|Perth wrote:Why dont Exetel just buy enough bandwidth. Then their wouldnt be a problem
You add 1Gbps, and that 1Gbps is swallowed up by increases in P2P consumption, so you add another 1Gbps, and the same happens.
The trend continues, as you also add more customers, who also add their P2P consumption.
Then, what do you do with the low areas of bandwidth, the situation would still be all P2P downloads done at 12.30am, and the remaining 6 or so hours after there would just be 1Gbps total of usage.
The idea is to manage the capacity so that P2P doesn't consume ALL the bandwidth, and encourage users to move their usage to times where the links aren't in high demand, thereby having the links running at 95% capacity all day (meaning you are getting the best value from them).

Another point that is missed, off-peak was originally designed to encourage people to make use of bandwidth when it was least used. Unfortunately the way the Internet is used has changed dramatically and the off-peak concept is now havng the reverse effect to what was originally intended.Omo|Perth wrote:Why dont Exetel just buy enough bandwidth. Bandwidth is the same 24/7, but the off-peak quota system encourages brain dead, greedy behavior amongst many of the P2P leaches. How can this be resolved and keep the masses happy? ....The six million dollar question!
The views I present are that of my own and NOT of any organisation I may belong to.
