Change In Off Peak/Peak Times

Post by ForumAdmin » Fri Jul 17, 2009 1:50 pm

From 1st August 2009 Exetel will change the peak/off peak times of all ADSL and Unwired plans:

From: 12 Midnight to 12 Noon

To: 2 AM to 12 Noon

All times are local times for the user's location.

Since introducing an ‘off period’ period on March 1st 2004, Exetel has made several changes to the time period and the amount of uncharged allowances to meet the changing needs of our customers and the changing nature of internet usage. These changes have been made in the best interests of all of Exetel’s customers and this change is simply recognising that there is a need to reduce the usage of the network bandwidth that now peaks (significantly) at exactly midnight each day by people setting automated download managers to start at that time rather than at some later time.

sorry to be asking a sily question,
but does that mean we no longer have the option of changing from 2 to 2?

It isn't a silly question - but you are correct.

Once this change comes into operation we will make similar options available

Shame offpeak had to be reduced to 10 hours but if this fixes the packet loss and lag that occurs around midnight (especially in VIC) and it was the only option then I guess it's alright. Users in the other states that didn't get packet loss at night might not see the need for the change.

I switched to 2am - 2pm option last month but I still get midnight lag. Hopefully when everyone has switched, the lag will be no more.

Monitor the graphs, if you still have the issue at 12am allowing time for users to adjust, then there could be a local issue and we can look into that.

I for one aren't bothered with the change. It will hopefully shift the P2P leechers to start downloading after most people have gone to bed. It will hopefully encourage those that have been to lazy to schedule their leeching and have less impact on the the network.

:D
The views I present are that of my own and NOT of any organisation I may belong to.

I don't mind the shift of time, if you need to manage the network load, then do so, I understand.

But reducing the off peak hours, I signed up for 12, wouldn't that be a breach of contract?

No, as the terms clearly state that Exetel reserve the right to change the off peak period length or data included, at any time.

does this mean there will be an option to change our offpeak to 4am till 2pm? i really would prefer that, but i guess i'm still grateful for having offpeak at all. i can actually download things instead of being the bandwidth nazi in my home.

Hopefully you will be rewarded for your original consideration.
