GSM codec for iphone

Post by sevusal » Tue Aug 04, 2009 10:35 pm

i use Siphon app on my iphone for Exetel voip account.
The Siphon app support 3 codes: G711, G722, GSM.
out of these 3, Exetel only works for G711 which used the highest BW (just over 1MB/min) which is very expensive for me to make voip call over 3G.
can you please tell why Exetel doesn't work when i use G722 or GSM codec? am i missing something or the network doesnt support them?

Hi,

I have also requested activation of this codec to voip support.

Lets hope they activate it asap!

send an email to voip@exetel.com.au

Do you expect the called party to decode GSM and G.722? Personally I'd give speex a higher priority for adoption by telcos.
G.711 is in all the free apps, because it too is free. The others mostly have royalties attached,

agree but not GSM and G.722. The G.729 (which is what exetel recommended when using soft phone) codec require to purchase a license.

just remember to ask for GSM-FR

I am wanting it enabled for WM6 devices, and now iphones too!

Unfortunately not all voip apps suppport the popular G729 codec due to royalty fees etc.

GSM-FR is the next best running at about 500kb/min which is around half that of the great sounding G711u and a codecs.

edit: perhaps edit your title to include Windows Mobile phones too!

i believe the codec support is not tied to any device. its more for the service. so if Exetel start supporting GSM codec then no matter which device (iphone or WM) you use, it will support GSM codec.
