Sipdroid on HTC Hero - Can't hear received calls
Sipdroid on HTC Hero - Can't hear received calls
Hi there,
I'm running Exetel HSPA and VOIP by using sipdroid on my HTC Hero.
I'm seem to be able to make VOIP calls ok but when someone calls my VOIP number I can't hear them. My phone rings and I answer it but I can't hear them and they can't hear me.
Would this be a problem with Sipdroid or is there something I have not set up properly?
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

Nobody knows?

is this using an Exetel HSPA Optus based or Vodafone based phone service?djfatrod wrote:Nobody knows?
Re: Sipdroid on HTC Hero - Can't hear received calls
I think the problem is that the Sipdroid software uses the g711 codec and unfortunately this page http://www.exetel.com.au/voip_overview.php says under "Exetel VOIP Via 'Soft Phone' Implementation" that
I find fring is very useable when you have good 3G reception but anything less than 3 bars and the delay seems to be much greater.
Hopefully exetel will make their MOIP software available on the Android platform soon.
I got around this by using Fring on my Android phone. http://forum.exetel.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=28593You may select free software that uses G.711 but be advised that you can only make outgoing calls. Incoming calls cannot be received.

Ahh thanks tones, that makes sense.
I actually tried fring first but the lag was pretty bad for me too, and I am in North Sydney!
Sipdroid had near perfect call quality so hopefully that will change in the future. I'm now trying SipAgent.
Yes jokiin - Exetel/Optus HSPA.

what codec options are available in Sipdroid and also does it have the option to add a STUN server?djfatrod wrote:Ahh thanks tones, that makes sense.

Re: Sipdroid on HTC Hero - Can't hear received calls
I hadn't heard of SipAgent... do you know what codecs it uses?
Re: Sipdroid on HTC Hero - Can't hear received calls
Not sure what a STUN server is but Sipdroid only supports G.711 I believe.
Quite a few people asking for G.729 too: http://code.google.com/p/sipdroid/issues/detail?id=49
SipAgent doesn't support 729 either
Only 711, GSM and Speex
Guess its Fring or nothing atm...

Re: Sipdroid on HTC Hero - Can't hear received calls
there are ways around the problem, using a service like Oztell, Voxalot etc you can handle multiple codecs by transcoding, GSM is a good low bitrate codec suitable for 3G usedjfatrod wrote:Not sure what a STUN server is but Sipdroid only supports G.711 I believe.

Re: Sipdroid on HTC Hero - Can't hear received calls
I know exetel only "support" g729 but what does anyone know what other codecs we can use.
Are GSM or speex available without going through a third party?

Re: Sipdroid on HTC Hero - Can't hear received calls
I kept getting codec errors with Sipdroid 1.4, the version currently on the Android Market. Version 1.4.1pre from sipdroid.org works fine, though. Sending and receiving calls through wlan connect using PCMA (64kbit), which I believe is g711.
The codec selection in Sipdroid was reworked two weeks ago and those changes are in 1.4.1pre. Give it a try if you're having problems. You might have to enable the 'allow install of non-Market apps' setting in the Application Settings menu, though.
Also, I believe Fring sends VoIP data to servers in America for transcoding before sending it back to Exetel's SIP server, which can't help but add 200-300ms latency to a conversation.

Re: Sipdroid on HTC Hero - Can't hear received calls
I'm having the same problems.
I've just got Sipdroid installed on my HTC Tatto (Android 1.6) and using a Exetel DID but am running into a few problems.
I'm entering the details correctly and it is registering. This is all over Wifi, not 3G by the way.
I can make outgoing calls, but I can only hear the other party, they can't hear me.
I can receive incoming calls, but neither party can hear each other after the call connects.
So is Fring the only workaround at this stage?
cheers
