Alleged Copyright Infringement Notices - Getting Spammed...

Post by aphasia » Thu May 24, 2012 11:14 pm

since the end of march i've been getting spammed with 'Copyright Infringement Notices'. i'm not talking about a few 'here and there' but hundreds (400 at last count).
before this i received a handful since being a exetel member (5+ years).

the recent lot i've got no idea about. most the shows i've never heard of, the rest i'd never even consider watching.
the ip address in the 'Infringement Notices' is mine and is the only thing that is correct in them.
at first i was ignoring them and thought it was a bit funny actually, tho after my mailbox starting filling up, not so much.

here's a list of some of the tv shows i've apparently been downloading & watching...

-South Park (about 3/4 of the notices are of this show. last time i watched an episode, i was on dial-up. some of which are in french?)
-Avatar.The.Last.Airbender (never heard of this one, some in german?)
-Teen Wolf (never heard of this one either unless were talking about the films with michael j fox & jason bateman...)
-The.Colbert.Report (do occasionally watch this but i stream it direct from the comedy central website)
-Geordie Shore (never heard of this one either)
-Big Time Rush (never heard of this one either)
-Jersey Shore (would never watch this garbage, some in french/spanish?)
-Teen Mom (never heard of this one either, some in spanish)
-Mob Wives (never heard of this one either)
-Hot in Cleveland (never heard of this one either)
-Victorious (never heard of this one either)
-Key and Peele (never heard of this one either)
-Let's Stay Together (never heard of this one either)
-LOVE AND HIP HOP (never heard of this one either)
-RUPAULS DRAG RACE (never heard of this one either)
-RUSSELL SIMMONS PRESENTS THE RUCKUS (never heard of this one either)
-Beavis and Butthead (ton of these as well, tho haven't watch this in maybe 10 years...)
-THE EXES (never heard of this one either)
-Degrassi.The.Next.Generation (never heard of this one either)
-iCarly (have heard of this but really, not something i'd watch)
-Alaska & Mario (never heard of this one either)
-Big Time Rush (never heard of this one either)
-Workaholics (never heard of this one either)
-Metal Evolution (never heard of this one either)
-The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (do occasionally watch this but i stream it direct from the comedy central website)

now some of these shows are in different languages (according to the notices), french, spanish & german. now i can utter a few phrases in french but badly. spanish, well i know some words but there all food related. german, outside a few WWII movies, the best i could manage here is a really bad german accent.
where the hell are these coming from? as of the start of January, i'm the sole user of my connection. i have wireless capability in my modem/router but its disabled. personally don't trust wireless connections much prefer the stability and bandwidth of a good CAT5e cable.
do i need to change my IP address of something?

Hi,

Since you are sure that wireless is disabled and no one else is accessing it. Please change your IP from Exetel members facility.

1) Log into Exetel members facility - http://www.exetel.com.au/index_alt.php
2) Click on "My Details" button
3) Click on "Change IP" tab
4) Read the information and click on "Change" button
5) Restart your modem to get the new IP.

Some lazy and possibly incompetent copyright cop is believing the tracker. Trackers can be spoofed. As advised, get rid of the IP address.

Since it has re occurred it is better to try with the IP change that we have suggested. Once done monitor the connection. Hopefully it should resolve issue. :)

yeah changing my IP didn't slow the tide of notices forwarded by exetel, got another 50+ since the change.

Are there any dates given for the alleged downloads?

It appears the most recent time stamp was on 20th morning. Could you please update me with few sample notices you have received, without an actual attempt.

Theoretically.......
If someone were to get a copyright nasty-gram, would changing your IP address afterwards have any benefit?
Do Exetel record details of old IP address?
Is there any need for VPN and, if so, is there a cheap one which would do the job?

I say again, theoretically....

If you continue to infringes another person's copyright notifications will be sent out as and when we receive them. We will have the logs of previous IPs assigned on a service number.
