Excessive usage and plan only 5 hours old

My wife and I recently switched from a $20 2G to a $25 5GB Plan
This switches over on 1st of the month (this morning)
When I logged in this morning I saw that I had apparently used 40% of my data allowance, despite the fact that I had been asleep since midnight.
A similar thing has happened to my wifes data
My daughters plan $20 (2GB) shows that she has apparently used 81% of her call, SMS and MMS allowance and 73% of her Data
She was also asleep!
My Wi Fi is fine and we checked to make sure that we were not using 4G instead ofour Wi Fi
Whats going on ?
