2nd NBN as a backup
2nd NBN as a backup
Hi Guys,
I have a NBN line and a ADSL line with Exetel.
Both work fine and the ADSL has always been around so most clients use the ADSL IP address to access my servers.
Exetel have told me I can exchange the IP addresses once the ADSL has to be turned off on October 12. Which is great.
The problem is this leaves me with no back up line in case the NBN goes down. Mine has been very good so far.
I have a fax line into the office as well which I can use for another NBN line, it use to be ADSL with aanet.
The question is
If I have 2 NBN lines with Exetel and one NBN line goes down with the other be down as well?
In the old days of ADSL I chose to have two ISP's who had different ADSL2+ units at the exchange.
If one was down the other would be fine.
I don't know enough about how the NBN is wired.
Would all NBN providers go down in the area if there was an NBN outage or would it only be ISP specific (like for ADSL)?
If i has 2 plans at different speeds would they then use different equipment?
Our NBN is using the normal copper phone line (no cable to the office which I believe is called fibre to the node)
thanks
Damon

Re: 2nd NBN as a backup
Assuming FTTN?
If so, you would connect to the same node in the street, so not much point having a backup NBN service.
Could you consider 4G?

Thanks
Thought so
Can 4G have a static IP as my clicents will need to open an IP in there firewall

Re: 2nd NBN as a backup
How much traffic?
Re: 2nd NBN as a backup
Hi James,
it would only be as a back up, so (hopefully) no traffic 99% of the time.
The other 1% it would only be work things so way less than a GB
It might only use 300MB per month assuming the NBN was down for half a day once a month.
I might google around to see if there is something out there.
I have found that some linksys routers enable you to pick up the hotspot from your phone as if it was a normal ISP connection (adsl or NBN)
I will give it a try. Sounds like a good idea.
thanks

Re: 2nd NBN as a backup
We have a plan that is $6.95 for no traffic, with excess at $20/gigabyte, comes with a static IP address.
Re: 2nd NBN as a backup
Hi James,
sounds good - can you give me a link?
or is this it
https://www.exetel.com.au/broadband/mobile
Did a search and couldn't find static IP

Re: 2nd NBN as a backup
$150 for 100 gigabytes with excess at $10.00
Re: 2nd NBN as a backup
hi James,
given it isn't on the website, is there a modem/dongle you will be recommending or would any 4G dongle do?
thanks

Re: 2nd NBN as a backup
Ideally your modem would have a SIM slot, otherwise we can supply the device.
Please email bashig@exetel.com.au for more details on this.
