Melbourne POP Loss of Service 19 Dec 2007

Post by NetworkAdmin » Wed Dec 19, 2007 8:21 am

Event

Access to the Melbourne POP was lost at 7:30am on 19 December 2007 until 8:05am.

No users were disconnected, however there was no Internet or external access to the POP routers or equipment during the outage.

Impact

No Internet access was available for anyone in Victoria connected via the Melbourne POP.

The cause is under investigation, whoever it looks most likely to be a WAN failure between Melbourne and Sydney.

The circuit has dropped again at 8:20am.

We are investigating with the WAN circuit supplier.

The supplier has confirmed there is a problem with the fibre optic cable between Sydney and Melbourne.

There is no restoration ETA at the moment.

Next update in 30 minutes

The WAN link has been restored. The supplier advises us they are not 100% confident it will remain stable, so it is being closely monitored for the next few hours.

Is there a possiblity that Exetel could look at a text to speech "service status" available from the 1300 number?

This sort of thing would be invaluable at times like this - its hard to do anything when there is no service - although the status service wouldn't fix the issues, it sure would be easier to tell clients something, rather than educated guesses.

Thank you for your suggestion.

As with everything we will add it to the list to look into.
