Speed tests different under different browsers

Post by CoreyPlover » Sat Feb 16, 2008 5:25 pm

Just to clarify, this is not a slow speed issue, but when I use the Exetel usage meter using my Opera browser I get speed results between 1.3 and 1.5Mbps but if I use Mozilla, I get results of 7.5-8Mbps. I actually had each browser open simultaneously and alternated between the 2 browsers for about 10 successive tests and got the same results. These tests were performed on Saturday, 5:20pm.

I'm curious whether anybody else has experienced or can duplicate this, and whether browser / general computer specs such as low processor / RAM or high resource intensive moments can contribute to artifically slow browser based speed tests.

Edit: Just tried Internet Explorer and got 7.5-8.5Mbps results. Is this an issue with the Exetel speed meter and Opera? Or maybe just my version or instance of Opera (9.24).

I think I might have to answer 'processing speed does affect it'.

It might just be my PC setup - it's years overdue for an overhaul - but I noticed when I ran speed test using http://www.speedtest.net, my FireFox CPU usage hit around 90%. I'm running on an AMD XP-2600 with 1.5gb RAM and WinXP. It might just be a configuration issue though, as I'd still consider this machine an adequate web surfer despite it's age.
