permanent p2p throttling
permanent p2p throttling
I would pay to have my p2p permanently throttled down to 0 all the time, would this be possible? Sick of idiots in my house wasting all the downloads on stupid movies and tv shows. and being capped you cant do anything.
is it possible?
is it possible?
Re: permanent p2p throttling
Probably not possible for a once off for a few customers, but I guess we could consider making it into a product, but there are numerous free solutions around using Linux based programs on a spare PC, sorta like your own firewall, but with decent functionality and power.
Re: permanent p2p throttling
Thanks for the suggestion but we don't have any spare pc lying around. Making it into a product would be great, it would sure be nice if my selfish family members couldn't cause us to be capped anymore. it could also prevent my family members from stealing copyrighted materials and getting us into more trouble.

Here is what I use http://www.gargoyle-router.com/Avignale wrote:I would pay to have my p2p permanently throttled down to 0 all the time, would this be possible? Sick of idiots in my house wasting all the downloads on stupid movies and tv shows. and being capped you cant do anything.

Loaded on a Linksys WRT54G router, full quota control and reliable throttling/QoS
Munka
Re: permanent p2p throttling
Last time you were at war with your unsharing sister over movies I mentioned Clear and Untangle. Rationing P2P is a snack for a gateway computer.

Munka's suggestion is best.Avignale wrote:Thanks for the suggestion but we don't have any spare pc lying around. Re: permanent p2p throttling
Well thanks you guys, but I've got an NB9w and gargoyle probably wouldnt go on it. I have however discovered a program called net limiter.
It costs a bit so before i get it i would like to know how to install without my sister knowing?
i could delete the program folder from the start menu, remove any icons from the desktop, but what about the icon own in the bottom right corner? is there a way to hide it in windows 7?
and when i mean hide it make it so a program doesnt even show up at all when you click the arrow as well
EDIT: ok after checking the net i found that net limiter doesnt work on windows 7 which is what i put on my sisters computer when i built it for her...
And i found out that uTorrent has a Webui i can use, so i can control her client from my computer anytime and throttle her downloads there. so all is well.
webUI for utorrent is great for keeping that cow for using all the downloads

Reason: No need to resort to crass language. Besides which, I'm not sure your Cartman-like approach is going to have much effect

Re: permanent p2p throttling
i would never play world of warcraft
Re: permanent p2p throttling
You don't need a fancy program.
Just use your router.
All the once I have seen are able to block P2P.
Just make sure you change the password on the Router!!

Re: permanent p2p throttling
Alfred, it's an old thread, but you can't block anyone in a domestic router who knows what he's doing. The stripped down Linux system in these doesn't have what is needed. You need a full Linux box. If you want one ready configured, look up Untangle or Ipfire, which can turn an old computer with 2 ethernet ports into a very tough gateway.
Re: permanent p2p throttling
If you are opposing anybody that knows what they are doing, then you are checkmate anyway, as you can simply physically bypass a Linux Proxy server anyway, since it's connected to the router LOLDazzled wrote:Alfred, it's an old thread, but you can't block anyone in a domestic router who knows what he's doing. yes..I realise it's an old thread and I used to run a Linux Proxy Server at home for years.
And as an example, if you have somebody opposing you that has some idea, then none will work as you can simply go and reset the router to default with a pen usually at the back
or
Physically bypass the Proxy Server, as in: Unplug CAt5 cable which comes form the Router..out of the server and plug directly into the switch/PC.
Still no go??
Reset Router to default via Pen.....voila!
Re: permanent p2p throttling
Ooops
Fergot
That's assuming you have the details of the ISP....Username/ password for the Router to ISP configuration.

Re: permanent p2p throttling
The gateway computer if used also needs securing against a new bootable device.
Re: permanent p2p throttling
Seems to me the OP wants an easy solution. I don't think the 2 people that would subscribe to the no P2P Exetel plan out of 100,000 would justify it's existence though.
