Email Question

Post by timerecords » Wed Feb 22, 2012 10:33 am

How do I stop emails that are downloaded and read on one computer, from being downloaded when logging in from another device/computer?

Its probably a stupid question, but its annoying when a laptop you might only use once every few weeks logs on and downloads 60 emails you've already read on your main computer/ipad.

What is the way to change the email settings so that once the original email has been downloaded, it is not downloaded again on a separate device in the future?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

There is an option in the email clients (E.g - outlook/outlook express) where you can select to ' Leave a copy on the server'. Once you deselect this, it will not leave any emails on the server and won't be downloaded to the other devices.
(E.g - Outlook : Go to Tools --> Email Accounts -->View or change email accounts --> Change --> More settings -->Advance : Un check the box under "Leaver a copy of messages on the server" and click OK)
To Log a fault ticket, please click click here or alternatively call Exetel VOIP numbers (02) 8030 1000 or 1300 788 141 (log faults 24x7)

Email messages stay on the Exetel mail server until a logged in computer issues a delete command. That is, your email client issues that command. Most clients have a configuration tick box "Leave mail on server" or the like, otherwise they both download and delete. You could set only the main machine's client to download/delete, and the have the rest "leave on server".

It sounds like all your machines are leaving on server. That will eventually fill the Exetel server reserved space and your incoming messages will then fail.

Post your client(s) (Thunderbird, Outlook etc), if you need help with the settings.
